Advocating for School-Based OTP Leadership: Our Podcast Conversation and Published Research
I’m excited to share a project that’s been both meaningful and energizing—one that reflects the passion I have for school-based OT and the importance of stepping into leadership roles within our field.
I recently had the honor of being a guest on the OT Schoolhouse Podcast – Episode 173: Advocating for School-Based OTP Leadership hosted by the incredible Jayson Davies. Joining me on this episode were two amazing colleagues, Jaime Spencer (MissJaimeOT) and Serena Zeidler, as we discussed a topic we’re all deeply passionate about: elevating leadership within the school-based OT profession.
This episode is more than just a conversation—it’s the culmination of months of collaboration, research, and dedication. Together, Jaime, Serena, and I conducted a study exploring how occupational therapy practitioners (OTPs) are perceived as leaders within the education system. We’re proud to announce that our research was recently published in the Journal of Occupational Therapy, Schools, & Early Intervention (JOTSEI) under the title:
“Perceptions of Occupational Therapy Practitioners as Leaders within the New York State Education System.”
In the podcast, we shared:
Why we pursued this research and what we discovered along the way
How school-based OTPs are uniquely positioned to lead within educational systems
The barriers and opportunities OTPs face when stepping into leadership roles
Actionable takeaways for therapists, administrators, and educators alike
This conversation is a must-listen for anyone working in school-based practice, especially those passionate about strengthening the role of occupational therapy in educational leadership.

We hope our work sparks important dialogue and empowers OTPs to confidently step into leadership roles—because our profession has so much to offer, and it’s time we take our seat at the table.
Stay tuned for more insights and updates from our journey. And thank you to Jayson Davies for providing such a powerful platform to share our voice!
